Harry James Potter (born 31 July 1980) is the only child of James and Lily Potter. He has inherited his mother's bright green eyes and his father's perpetually untidy jet-black hair. In his younger years, Harry is described as being small and skinny for his age. Probably the most intriguing of his physical characteristics is a long thin scar on his forehead shaped like a bolt of lightning. This is the only physical mark Harry bears that attests to his horrific and traumatic past. It was left by a curse cast by Lord Voldemort on 31 October 1981, which killed his parents and destroyed their home. Harry attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry is well-known among the other students before he even arrives at the school and is also famous among the wizarding world for being the only person to ever survive the killing curse.
Ronald Bilius "Ron" Weasley (born 1 March 1980) has the trademark flaming red hair of the Weasley family and blue eyes. He is described as being tall, thin and gangly, with freckles, a long nose and big hands and feet. Ron is a Gryffindor student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is close friends with Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. He plays a key role in many of Harry's adventures. Ron is a foil character to Harry. Ron's lack of money shines a light on Harry's fortune while Harry's lack of family is underscored by Ron's large, close-knit family. Ron, who is one of seven kids and not particularly gifted, receives little attention, while Harry is one of the most famous wizards alive and almost always at the centre of attention.
Hermione Jane Granger (born 19 September 1979) is a Gryffindor student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is one of the best friends of Harry Potter and Ron and Ginny Weasley. She plays an important role in many of Harry's adventures and serves as a moderating influence on both Harry and Ron. Hermione has brown eyes and, when she first appears, "bushy brown hair and rather large front teeth". Many at the school have teased her for her looks, including, on one occasion, Professor Snape. Hermione is very studious, and can be bossy and fussy; she is one of the most intelligent students in her year and one of the best in the entire school. She is often teased for this reason. Harry and Ron depend on her for academic help, and her knowledge and common sense always prove valuable in overcoming the trio's challenges. Of all the given birthdays of the students in her year, Hermione's is the only one in 1979, making her the oldest.
Draco Malfoy (born 5 June 1980) is Harry Potter's principal rival at Hogwarts. Draco is described as a tall boy with a pale, pointed face, white-blond hair, and cold grey eyes. Harry describes him as a spoiled, arrogant, and selfish person. Malfoy frequently taunts Ron Weasley about his family's poor financial standing and treats Hermione Granger with disdain for being Muggle-born, frequently calling her a "Mudblood". His family are known Death Eaters and after his father is imprisoned, he strives to become a death eater and to serve Lord Voldemort.
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (born c. 1845) is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Dumbledore is described as tall and thin, with long white hair and a long beard. He has blue eyes, a very long and crooked nose (looking as if it had been broken at least twice) and long fingers. He wears half-moon spectacles. He claims to have a scar above his left knee, its provenance unknown, which happens to be a perfect map of the London Underground. Considered one of the most powerful wizards in the world, Dumbledore is benevolent and eccentric, an archetypal good wizard in the style of Merlin or Gandalf. It is said that he is the only wizard Lord Voldemort ever feared. He is a fan of knitting patterns and once told Harry that one could never have enough socks.
Sirius Black was framed for Pettigrew's "murder" and those of the bystanders, as well as the Potters' betrayal. His later escaped from Azkaban which led to the widest manhunt ever in the wizarding world. He escaped from Azkaban after learning that Pettigrew was still alive and at large. After some confusion, Harry came to realise that Sirius was innocent of betraying his parents, and began to see his godfather as the father he never had. Because he was never cleared, he lived in hiding from the ministry for the rest of his life.
Lord Voldemort (born Tom Marvolo Riddle on 31 December 1926) is the arch-villain of Harry Potter. He is an evil wizard bent on securing unmatched power and achieving immortality through the practice of the Dark Arts. He has appeared in many forms: through his possession of his servant Professor Quirrell, through his diary, reviving himself through magic, in a battle with Albus Dumbledore, and shown in flashback sequences using a Pensieve. "Tom Marvolo Riddle" can be anagrammed into "I am Lord Voldemort". Voldemort is so feared in the Wizarding world that his name is considered to be ineffable. Most characters in the novels refer to him as "You-Know-Who" or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" rather than saying his name aloud, although Harry Potter, who was not conditioned to fear his name, speaks the name freely except when attempting to be sensitive to others' fears. Some, like Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley, after some hesitancy, begin to follow Harry's lead. Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore never hesitate to speak his name. His followers, the Death Eaters, do not use his name but instead refer to him as the "Dark Lord", and address him as "My Lord" or "Master". Most in the Wizarding world flinch or protest when they hear his name spoken openly. Voldemort is considered one of the most powerful wizards alive. It has been said that the only wizard he ever feared was Albus Dumbledore, though Voldemort has repeatedly denied fearing Dumbledore.
Severus Snape (b. January 9, c. 1958) is the Potions master at Hogwarts. Snape attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from c. 1969 to c. 1976, was appointed Professor of Potions, and Head of Slytherin house, in c. 1981. His physical appearance is that of the classic villain: thin, "hook-nosed" and having "long, greasy hair", clad in forbidding black robes "like an overgrown bat." Harry Potter intensely dislikes and distrusts Snape for his chequered past and the animosity Snape displays toward him. Snape used to be a Death Eater supporter of Voldemort and the Dark Arts. Has wanted the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts since he started teaching. Was granted this is Harry's 6th year at Hogwarts. After his kill of Dumdledore, he fled from the school.
Rubeus Hagrid (born December 6, c. 1928) is usually addressed by his surname. Hagrid is the groundskeeper and Care Of Magical Creatures teacher for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hagrid is twice as tall as the average man and nearly three times as wide. He loves animals and magical creatures, particularly those that are unusual or dangerous. He is one of the first characters to imply that the idea of thinking of wizards as "purebloods" and "half-bloods" is a dated concept. Hagrid is known for his thick West country accent. He has a cowardly boarhound named Fang who he loves, despite not being dangerous. Hagrid is a horrible cook and great friends with Harry, Ron and Hermione.
